More than 100 players from a dozen mid-Atlantic “base-ball clubs” will gather in Philadelphia August 20 and 21 for the first Philadelphia Vintage Base-Ball Exhibition and Fair.
Sporting wool uniforms and 19th century equipment (no gloves), the teams will play using 1860s-1880’s rules. “Matches” will commence at 10 a.m. and run until 4:30 p.m. on three fields at the Marine Corps Parade Grounds, South Broad Street at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Hitting, Pitching and Fielding Clinics will be held for all those wanting to participate.
All events are free and open to the public. Hay Bales will be the provided “grandstand.” Period appropriate “fare” including barbecued chicken, oysters and ice cream will be available. Historical groups will be on hand to provide information on their activities.
